Hughes’s use of literary elements, such as simile, symbolism, and imagery, to
advance meaning and evoke emotions. To aid your work, consult the Internet to
find information about the rivers, objects, and time periods mentioned in the poem.
Also, consider other issues in Hughes’s era that may have inspired this poem.
